A Chinese coal ship has run aground on the Great Barrier Reef off the Queensland coast and has leaked four tonnes of oil into the water.

The ship is believed to be holding a further 900 tonnes of oil.

Two tugboats are in place to stabilise the ship with salvage experts considering pumping the remaining oil from the ship.

Gilly Llewellyn, Australian director of the World Wide Fund of Nature, says that the situation is a potential environmental disaster.

Maritime Safety Queensland general manager, Patrick Quirk, however is confident it will be able to stabilise the ship and avoid major disaster.
